Never Eat Soggy Waffles
I bet you are reading the title and thinking….WOW or well duh!!! As my daughter and I were walking to one of our favorite restaurants, she told me that she could remember the order of the directions, North, East, South, and West by the phrase: Never Eat Soggy Waffles. What can I say, if that helps her to remember, so be it!
When it comes down to it, our Heavenly Father has given us an amazing ability to learn. Just the ability to observe and then repeat is something that is truly a gift from above. Another wonderful gift is watching my children learn and grow. I do think it is one of the best joys of a parent to see their children learn and grasp new concepts.
One of the learning methods we have done with both of our children, has been to teach them baby sign language. One of the biggest frustrations of a parent with an infant/toddler is the ability to communicate. We started within a month or two of birth with a few basic words. Please, Thank You, Milk, Food, Mommy, Daddy, and More. Months went by and we continue to repeat as we do things to demonstrate the words, and most of the time it is easy to think…man, is our child really getting this?? Then one day…when you are ready to give up, it happens..kinda like this:
Your little one uses the motion for please…because they really want that powdered donut…and a while later, after they have eaten the donut, they will use the sign for more…and well, you have no choice but to give them that 2nd powdered donut. (Don’t worry…they were the small ones in the overpriced bag at the grocery store). The thing to remember is that they were paying attention, and they were learning as we were teaching.
When our children demonstrate their ability to learn, it gives us as parents great joy, because our investment is showing the first sign of a dividend. The really amazing thing is, that first skill that a child learns, is like the beginning of a snowball, that begins to gain size as it rolls down a hill.
The same really does apply to our spiritual lives. We are going on, living our life, and then bam something happens and we realize our need for a relationship with our Creator. In that moment we must respond by accepting Jesus Christ as our Savior. It really doesn’t stop there, because we have been born again, and we really must learn how to live again. It is that process of living again that is so difficult, because just as our children develop bad habit, we as Christians do as well. Believe me, my parents worked very hard to try and break me of my bad habits growing up…well, our Heavenly Father will do the same…it is just that his tactics may be different.
I would encourage to embrace the ability to learn. Learning is such a huge part of our lives, and when we take that ability to learn and focus it on learning about our Creator and His Plan, you will gain knowledge and wisdom that far exceeds any classroom in this world.
If you are reading this, and you have not committed your life to Jesus, I would encourage you to not wait any longer. There is nothing definite about our mortal future, except that we will eventually die. If you are not certain about Jesus, take some time to earnestly get to know Him, I would suggest reading the Gospel of John. Above all, spend time in Prayer and tell God your needs, He will answer a sincere prayer…you may not like the answer…but He will Answer.
